In a quest to maintain highest academic and business standards in Malawi and globally UHB established the Directorate of Quality Assurance. The directorate of quality assurance (Dir. Q. Ass) provides monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) functions in the delivery of services at the institution. Given that the UHB is an institution of higher learning, the Dir. Q. Ass works closely with the Vice Chancellor to ensure that the preparation of academic programmes and the delivery of modules by lecturers complies with the standards of excellence that are expected at UHB and the National Council for Higher Education in Malawi.
This Directorate initiate the process of quality assurance by monitoring modules and courses in all programmes of the University. In conjunction with the deans this directorate formulates the university’s quality monitoring and evaluation framework, including negotiating and establishing in-house quality procedures, standards and/or specifications and formulating a detailed implementation calendar that will be used in the quality monitoring process. In this regard, the directorate receives feedback from both the deans and the university senate. The team from the directorate assists in organizing and contributing to the induction of staff on matters to do with quality assurance, including seminars and workshops that may happen from time to time.
With the assistance of the various deans, the directorate coordinates staff performance evaluation by students and analyses the data with heads of departments every semester.
Dir. Q. Ass prepares a schedule indicating when the various programmes will be reviewed. Once the programmes are reviewed, the Dir. Q. Ass works with deans produces a report to be submitted to university committees and the senate. The Dir. Q. Ass also maintains a record of when the programmes were reviewed and maintains programmes from external examiners. It is also the responsibility of the Dir. Q. Ass together with other officials to decide who among the staff goes for further training, and to train the staff in quality assurance matters.
The Dir. Q. Ass coordinates the process of conducting an academic audit and producing a report for the university Council. In conjunction with deans of faculties to coordinate and facilitate the process of accrediting various programmes. In the same vein, the Dir. Q. Ass collages and distributes information from accrediting bodies, such as the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and other relevant professional bodies.
